Field guide
How far apart should path lights be?
A practical guide to path light spacing, tighter spacing around bends and safer lighting around steps.
A usable starting range
Many domestic paths work somewhere between 1.8m and 3m between low path lights, but that range changes quickly when the path bends, narrows or includes steps.
Bends and steps are not normal spacing
Treat bends, gates and steps as decision points. A single extra lamp at the decision point can be more useful than evenly spaced lights along the whole route.
Avoid the runway effect
Perfect symmetry can look harsh. Alternate sides where the route is informal and use lower output where the goal is edge reading rather than floodlighting.
